Aviram Sharma is a Senior Researcher at the Post-Growth Innovation Lab at the University of Vigo, Spain. He is a social scientist whose research lies at the intersection of Science and Technology Studies (STS), Environmental Studies, and Critical Development Studies.
Prior to his current position, he held the María Zambrano Fellowship at the same laboratory (2023-2024), a prestigious programme designed to attract international talent to the Spanish higher education system. Before moving to Spain, he was one of the founding faculty member of the School of Ecology and Environment Studies at Nalanda University, India, where he served as an Assistant Professor from 2015 to 2023. Earlier, he held research positions at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex (UK), and Jawaharlal Nehru University (India) between 2014 and 2015. He holds an M.Phil. and a Ph.D. in Science Policy from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and a Master's degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Delhi, India.
He is a Senior Research Fellow at the Earth System Governance Project, a Faculty Affiliate at the Climate Social Science Network (Brown University), an affiliate of the Ostrom Workshop at Indiana University, USA, and a member of the Science and Democracy Network, USA. He has held visiting appointments at the Centre for Research in Economic Sociology and Innovation (CRESI), University of Essex, Colchester, UK; the Institute for Advanced Studies on Science, Technology and Society (IAS-STS), Graz, Austria; and the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany.
He serves as Section Editor (Technology and Social Change) for Sociology Compass (Wiley) and Associate Editor for Heliyon: Society and Politics (Cell Press) and the Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences (Springer). Besides, he serves on the editorial board of several other journals, including the Bulletin of Science, Technology & Society (Sage), International Journal of Qualitative Methods (Sage), Humanities and Social Sciences Communications (Springer Nature), Societal Impacts and Sustainable Horizons (Elsevier), and the Eco-Social Politics & Policy book series of Liverpool University Press UK.
His research has been published in leading international journals in his area of research, such as Habitat International, Policy and Society, Public Understanding of Science, Energy Research & Social Science, Science Technology and Society, Regional Environmental Change, Area Development and Policy, Water International, Local Environment, and others. In addition, it has appeared in edited volumes published by leading academic presses, including Oxford University Press, Routledge, Springer, Bristol University Press, and Nomos. His research has been widely covered by international and national media outlets, such as the Wall Street Journal, Reuters, Mongabay, the Times of India, the Indian Express, and numerous others.
His theoretically grounded and empirically focused research contributes to academic and policy debates across two thematic areas. One strand examines the democratisation of scientific decision-making, public participation, and multi-scalar governance processes. The other explores the practices, policies, and politics of sustainability and socio-environmental transformations in the Global South.
